CBSE syllabus changed: Class 11-12 Physics syllabus changes for 2020-21
As the CBSE syllabus has been slightly changed for classes 9-12 due to the school closure because of the Coronavirus lockdown, we got talking to a CBSE board examiner about the kind of changes seen in the Class 11-12 Physics syllabus for 2020-21.
NCERT has come up with a new academic calendar as well as per the HRD Ministry's orders. The changed CBSE syllabus has fewer activities and practical work since this is something that cannot be carried out via the online classes that CBSE schools are holding to make sure studies don't come to a standstill with the Coronavirus pandemic.
We have for you here the changes in the Physics syllabus of classes 11 and 12 as explained by CBSE board examiner Shampa Chakraborty, a senior Physics teacher with 23 years of teaching experience.
CBSE board examiner explains Class 11-12 Physics syllabus changes
The major changes are in the Class 11-12 Physics Practical syllabus and the changes are almost the same across both the classes for the practical section.
"The major change I am seeing for this year's CBSE Class 11-12 Physics syllabus is the addition of an activity for practical evaluation. Activities were not included for Physics practical exam evaluation before," said Physics board examiner Shampa Chakraborty.
"Earlier, there were only 2 experiments asked for the exams. Now students of classes 11 and 12 will be asked to perform 2 experiments plus 1 activity," she explained.
"Earlier, activities weren't considered that important since they didn't come for the exams," she said.
Also, for both classes 11 and 12, the number Physics experiments has been reduced from 15 to 12.
But since so many classes were lost due to schools being shut due to the coronavirus lockdown, how much does the CBSE changed syllabus help? Will these steps help teachers complete the syllabus smoothly?
"I don't think so," says Chakraborty, "But since we are going to take online classes, we are at least not losing any time."
"But we are definitely losing time in Physics practicals because of the lockdown as you need a physical presence for these classes - you can't do them online. That's why I think CBSE reduced the practical syllabus," said the board examiner.
The CBSE Class 11 Physics theory syllabus has not changed but a small change was made in the Class 12 Physics theory syllabus.
"The Class 12 Physics theory syllabus hasn't technically changed - one tiny portion has been added only," said Shampa Chakraborty.
"The additions of the topics of Half Life and Mean Life is not a very significant because we had to cover those anyway while teaching Radioactivity," she said.
The only factor is that this subtopic has been explicitly mentioned in the CBSE Physics syllabus for 2020-21.

CBSE Class 11 Physics syllabus changes for 2020-21
Theory:
No change in syllabus.
Practicals:
1. From the earlier requirement of at least 15 experiments (minimum of 6 from each section) in total, now 12 experiments need to be done (minimum of 6 from each section).
2. From the earlier requirement of at least 5 activities (minimum of 2 each from Section A and Section B), now 6 activities need to be done (minimum of 3 each from Section A and Section B).
3. In evaluation scheme, 'two experiments one from each section' had the weightage of 8 + 8 marks. But now it has changed to a weightage of 7 + 7 marks.
4. In evaluation scheme, 'Practical record' had the weightage of 6 marks. But now it has changed to a weightage of 5 marks.
5. One activity has been be given in the CBSE Class 11 Physics Practical exam pattern for evaluation now. 'One activity from any section' having a weightage of 3 marks will be asked.
6. Activities were earlier supposed "to be demonstrated by teachers" as per the CBSE Physics syllabus. Now, activities have "to be performed by students."
7. 'For the purpose of understanding only' section has been deleted after the heading Activities in Section A and Section B.
CBSE Class 12 Physics syllabus changes for 2020-21
Theory:
1. The number of periods of Unit 1 has been changed from 22 to 24. For Unit 2, the number of periods needed has been changed from 20 to 18.
2. The topic 'Experimental study of photoelectric effect' has been added to Chapter 11 (Dual nature of radiation and matter).
3. The topics Half life and Mean life have been added to Chapter 13 (Nuclei).
Practicals:
1. From the earlier requirement of at least 15 experiments (minimum of 6 from each section) in total, now 12 experiments need to be done (minimum of 6 from each section).
2. From the earlier requirement of at least 5 activities (minimum of 2 each from Section A and Section B), now 6 activities need to be done (minimum of 3 each from Section A and Section B).

5. One activity has been been given for the CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical evaluation now. 'One activity from any section' having a weightage of 3 marks will be asked.
6. Activities were earlier supposed "to be demonstrated by teachers" as per the CBSE Physics syllabus. Now, activities have "to be performed by students."
7. There have been a few other changes in the CBSE Class 12 Physics Practicals - Experiments section.
Section-A (Experiments)
(a) The language of experiments 1 and 2 has been changed.
Experiment 1:
- Earlier: To determine resistance per of a given wire by plotting a graph for potential difference versus current.
- Now: To determine resistivity of two/three wires by plotting a graph for potential difference versus current.
Experiment 2:
- Earlier: To find resistance of a given wire using meter bridge and hence determine the resistivity (specific resistance) of its material.
- Now: To find resistance of a given wire/standard resistor using meter bridge.
(b) Earlier there were 10 experiments but now, only 8 experiments are there as Experiments 3 and 4, and 8 and 9 have been changed into or parts of each other.
- To verify the laws of combination (series) of resistances using a metre bridge. [OR]
- To verify the laws of combination (parallel) of resistances using a metre bridge.
- To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into a voltmeter of desired range and to verify the same. [OR]
- To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into an ammeter of desired range and to verify the same.
Section-B (Experiments)
(a) Experiment 'To determine the wavelength of a laser beam by diffraction' has been deleted.
(b) Earlier there were 10 experiments to do but now there are 9 experiments only.
(c) 'For the purpose of understanding only' has been deleted after the heading Activities in Section A and Section B.
